The Senators say they’re in the hunt for highly-regarded U.S. college defenceman Justin Schultz.
“I believe we have a shot,” Senators assistant GM Tim Murray told The Team 1200 Monday. “I believe it’s down to 3-5 teams, and I believe we’re one of those teams.”
A 6-foot-2, 185-pound native of West Kelowna, B.C., Schultz, 21, became an unrestricted free agent Monday because of a loophole in the current collective bargaining agreement. He originally was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in 2008, but did not sign with the club.
Last season, Schultz had 16 goals and 44 points in 37 games.
Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke, who drafted Schultz in Anaheim, also has been rumoured to be in the race. Other teams mentioned include the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers.
